The author defines a general Mehler-Fock transform involving as kernel the Legendre function \(P^{\mu}_{-+t}(x)\) of general order \(\mu\) and an arbitrary index \(-+t\), \(t=\sigma +i\tau\), \(-\infty <\tau <\infty\). Further an inversion formula is developed, involving the Legendre function \(P^{\mu}_{-+t}(x)\) as kernel. This establishes a symmetric inversion theory for the general Mehler-Fock transformation. A Parseval type relation for this transform is also obtained. Special cases of the results contain many well-known formulae. This transform is useful for solving many axisymmetric potential problems.
