The famous Fastkörper paper of the author [Abh. Math. Semin. Univ. Hamb. 11, 187-220 (1935; Zbl 0011.10302)] contained a description of the complements in finite Frobenius groups. This paper is a source of many ideas which are now in the foundations of the classification of finite simple groups. The present paper generalizes and strengthens some results of it. It is proved that if an irreducible finite matrix group over \({\mathbb{C}}\), which coincides with its commutator subgroup, has no nontrivial elements with eigenvalue 1 then it is 2-dimensional and is isomorphic to SL(2,5). Moreover all such subgroups are conjugate in GL(2,\({\mathbb{C}})\).
