Waldhausen's algebraic K-theory, applied to categories of complexes, permits a treatment of higher algebraic K-theory of schemes in the spirit of \textit{A. Grothendieck} [Sémin. Géom. algébr. 1966-1967, SGA 6, Lect. Notes Math. 225 (1978; Zbl 0218.14001)]. This gives the covariance of the K-theory of sheaves for proper morphisms. The author introduces a bivariant algebraic K-theory answering a question of Fulton and MacPherson.
