The group of automorphisms of a locally finite tree is a locally compact group that behaves analogously to a rank one simple Lie group. There is a close relation between certain simple Lie groups and groups of tree automorphisms. This is a survey of the results in this field of the author as well as of H. Bass, M. Burger, Y. Glasner, R. Kulkarni, A. Lubotzky, G. Margulis, R. Zimmer, and the others.
