Since its introduction in the work of \textit{S. Brenner}, \textit{M. Butler} [Lect. Notes Math. 832, 103-169 (1980; Zbl 0446.16031)] and \textit{D. Happel}, \textit{C. M. Ringel} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 274, 399-443 (1982; Zbl 0503.16024)], tilting theory has been an essential tool in the representation theory of algebras. In the paper under review, the authoress gives a very interesting survey of this theory, going back first to some predecessors of this theory in the work of \textit{I. N. Bernstein}, \textit{I. M. Gel'fand}, \textit{V. A. Ponomarev} [Usp. Mat. Nauk 28, No. 2(170), 19-33 (1973; Zbl 0269.08001)] and \textit{M. Auslander}, \textit{M. I. Platzeck}, \textit{I. Reiten} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 250, 1-46 (1979; Zbl 0421.16016)]. In the sequel, she discusses three lines of the development of this theory, two of them going via the generalization to tilting modules of higher projective dimension. Most of the paper is then devoted to the discussion of the tilting theory with respect to torsion pairs in abelian categories as introduced by \textit{D. Happel}, \textit{I. Reiten}, \textit{S. Smalø} [Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 575 (1996; Zbl 0849.16011)].
