The von Neumann paradox for the line states that one can, starting with \([0,1]\), decomposing it into finitely many pieces and mapping each of them with a contractive mapping, obtain any compact interval. (In case of the line isometries do not suffice.) In this paper the author presents a survey of his results in a paper of the same title (cf. the preceding review) about the precise estimate of the number of pieces needed in the paradox. Some basic ideas of the proofs are indicated and two problems about this paradox in higher dimensions are stated. Recently, Problem 2 (Can any compact set of positive measure be {Lipschitzianly} mapped onto a ball?) was affirmatively answered in the plane by D. Preiss, but it is still open in three and more dimensions.
