In a span of 166 pages this tightly constructed text provides a sophisticated reader with a succinct introduction to almost all major aspects of the theory of closed Riemann surfaces. This includes a quick 5-page view of open surfaces, as well as a chapter entirely devoted to examples (elliptic and hyperelliptic curves, modular curves) and a pictorial introduction to surface topology. Proofs of major results are included, the Riemann-roch theorem is allotted both an elementary proof and a derivation via Serre duality. The book would serve very well as a program for a seminar or a course (it is based on a course given by the author) and contains bibliographical suggestions for those who need a less breathless place or a closer book.
