    The author constructs a uniform asymptotic approximation in the domain \(\Omega = (0,1) \times (0,1) \times (0,T]\) for the system of two singularly perturbed parabolic equations \[ u^ i_ t + b^ i(x)u^ i_ x - \varepsilon^ 2 a^ i(x)u^ i_{xx} - a^ i(x) u^ i_{yy} + c^ i(x,y,t)u^ i + d^ i(x,y,t) u^ j = f^ i(x,y,t, \varepsilon) \] with initial and boundary conditions \[ u^ i |_{t = 0} = \varphi^ i (x,y, \varepsilon),\;u^ i |_{x = 0} = \psi^ i_ 0 (y,t, \varepsilon),\;u^ i |_{x=1} = \psi^ i_ 1 (y,t,\varepsilon), \] \[ \left. \left( {\partial u^ i \over \partial y} \right) \right |_{y = 0,1} = 0,\;i=1,2,\;j=1,2,\;i \neq j, \] \(\varepsilon\) is a small parameter. All the data depending on \(\varepsilon\) are of the form \(g(\cdot, \varepsilon) = g_ 1 (\cdot) + \varepsilon g_ 2 (\cdot) + O(\varepsilon^ 2)\). A smoothing process for the nonsmooth members of the asymptotic approximation is performed.
