    Let \((X,d)\) be a metric space and \(T\) a mapping of \(X\) into itself which satisfy the following contractive condition: \[ \begin{aligned} d(Tx,Ty)\leq & a \max \{d(x,y), d(x,Tx), d(y,Ty), \textstyle{1\over 2} [d(x,Ty)+ d(y,Tx)]\}+\\ + & b \max \{d(x,Tx), d(y,Ty)\}+ c[d(x,Ty)+ d(y,Tx)]\end{aligned} \] for all \(x,y\in X\) where \(a\), \(b\), \(c\) are nonnegative real numbers such that \(a+b+2c=1\). In the present paper the author establishes, among others, the following theorem: Let \((X,d)\) be a complete metric space and \(T\) satisfy the above conditions. If \(a\geq 0\), \(b>0\), \(c>0\) then: 1) \(T\) is asymptotically regular (i.e. \(\lim_{n\to\infty} d(T^{n+1} x,T^ n x)=0\) for all \(x\in x\)); 2) \(T\) has a unique fixed point \(p\) and at this point \(T\) is continuous; 3) for any \(x\in X\), \(d(T^ n x,p)\leq \{2(1-bc)^ n/bc\} d(x,Tx)\). This result generalizes a great number of known generalizations of the Banach contraction principle [see \textit{B. E. Rhoades}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 226, 257-290 (1977; Zbl 0365.54023)].
