After introducing the narrow topology on the set \({\mathcal C}\) of all capacities on a given topological space it is proved a general version of an Ascoli theorem for capacities. This theorem states that a subset of \({\mathcal C}\) is compact if and only if it is confined. Many Ascoli theorems for particular classes of capacities can be deduced from this result by proving that the given class is a closed subset of \({\mathcal C}\). In particular, various classes of measures are included and Ascoli theorems are proved for spaces of upper semicontinuous functions. Finally, the authors give alternate proofs of the Topsøe and the classical Prokhorov theorem.
