An exponentially small splitting of separatrices for a pendulum with a rapidly oscillating suspension point is studied. A special averaging method is developed by means of which an asymptotic formula for the rate of the separatrix splitting is obtained. It is shown, in particular, that the ordinary Melnikov integral may give wrong asymptotics in the case under consideration.
