The authors investigate the effect of shear deformation and rotary inertia terms on free vibration of a beam with overhang. Numerical results for two different sets of boundary conditions are presented. It is shown that for very short span between the supports, the classical theory greatly overestimates the frequency of hinged end beams, but it is adequate for clamped end beams. This conclusion is essentially reversed for beams with very long spans.
