The author studies lower semicontinuity of variational functionals on the basis of Jensen's inequality for parametrized measures. In this way, many of the classical semicontinuity results are regained. Moreover, under an appropriate convexity assumption (called closed \(H^{1,p}\)- quasiconvexity) on the integrand, a semicontinuity result without growth restrictions is obtained.
