The author discusses the existence of multiple positive solutions of \(- \Delta u= \lambda u+ u^ p\) in \(\Omega\) with Dirichlet boundary conditions where \(\Omega\) is a bounded smooth domain in \(\mathbb{R}^ n\) with \(n\geq 4\), \(p\) is the critical exponent and \(\lambda\) is small and positive. If \(m= \text{cat } \Omega>1\), he obtains \(m+1\) distinct solutions. Of these, \(m\) concentrate as \(\lambda\to 0\) while the other frequently has as limit a positive solution as \(\lambda\to 0\). This improves work of \textit{O. Rey} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 13, No. 10, 1241-1249 (1989; Zbl 0702.35101)] and \textit{M. Lazzo} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 314, No 1, 61-64 (1992; Zbl 0761.35021)]. He also shows that the multiplicity results persist under rather general perturbations of the domain which can change the topology.
