The damping study of composites is approached from the viewpoint of macromechanical analysis. Two damping models are developed, i.e. the viscoelastic damping model, and the specific damping capacity model. The present numerical results by the finite element method are compared with the other researchers' works, both on polymer-matrix and metal-matrix composites. An investigation is made to show the parametric effects of side-to-thickness ratio, principal moduli ratio, the total number of layers, lamination arrangement, and boundary conditions.
