By a continued fraction analysis, fundamental solutions of \(x^ 2- dy^ 2= \pm1\) are found when the value of \(d\) is given by certain polynomials. He also proves that if \(u^ 2- 2v^ k= \pm1\), then \(x^ 2- dy^{2k} =\pm1\) when \((d; x,y)= (u^ 2\mp 4; u(v^ k\mp 1),v)\).
