The authors consider the problem of magnetostatics in a medium with piecewise constant magnetic premeability. The main object of the discussion is the consideration of systems associated with electron optics and magnetic lenses, and an integral equation for the solution of the current distribution is formulated. It is suggested that the boundary element method using piecewise linear approximation of functions is particularly suitable for the numerical solution, and the results of some calculations for some simple problems where the solution is known are given. The paper depends heavily on results which are not proved but which come from the references quoted.
