A detection algorithm for the localization of unknown fault lines of a surface from scattered data is given. The basic features of the thin plate spline interpolation scheme are reviewed, further analysis of its local approximation behaviour is discussed in Section 2. The triangulation methods which is the basis of this detection algorithm is provided in Section 3. A detailed discussion of the detection algorithm is given in Section 4. The last section presents selected numerical examples which illustrate the efficiency of the detection algorithm.
