Energy-transfer from a dilaton field to an electromagnetic field is investigated. It is shown that a high-density energy of a dilaton field, can be quickly transformed to electromagnetic energy and lead to intense heating of a relativistic plasma. This is proposed as a mechanism for gamma-ray bursts.
