    Die Lagrangeschen Gleichungen lassen sich unter Benutzung einer willkürlichen Funktion \(\theta\) der \(q\) und des \(t\) so schreiben: \[ \frac{d}{dt}\left[\frac{\partial}{\partial\dot{q}} \left(T+\frac{d\theta}{dt}\right)\right]\frac{\partial}{\partial q}\left(T+\frac{d\theta}{dt}\right)=Q. \] \(T\) ist die kinetische Energie. Es wird gefragt, ob sich die Gleichungen in die Form \[ D_{\lambda}\left(\frac{\partial\varOmega}{\partial\dot{q}}\right)\frac{\partial\varOmega}{\partial q}=0 \] bringen lassen, wo \(D_{\lambda}=\dfrac{d}{dt}+\lambda\dfrac{\partial}{\partial t}\) ist, \(\lambda=\lambda(q,t)\). \(\varOmega\) heißt ``fonction génératrice'', \(\lambda\) ``genre''. Insbesondere wird der Fall \(\dfrac{\partial\lambda}{\partial q}=0\) untersucht.
