Es wird eine Stelle der Abhandlung von Sarrus ``Recherches sur le calcul des variations'' (Mém. Sav. Étr. X) kritisirt, nämlich seine Lösung der Aufgabe, eine Fläche zu finden, die bei einer gegebenen Oberfläche das grösste Volumen enthält. Sarrus hat dabei nicht berücksichtigt, dass die gesuchte Fläche auch cylindrische und ebene Teile haben kann.
