Verbindet man eine Anzahl beliebig gegebener Punkte durch Curven, so entsteht eine netzförmige Figur, in welcher die gegebenen Punkte die Knoten sind, während die Verbindungslinien die Zweige des Netzes bilden. Alsdann gilt das folgende merkwürdige Theorem. Gehen von \(n\) beliebigen Punkten des Netzes Ströme aus, welche sich allmählich durch alle Zweige verteilen, jedoch abbrechen, sobald zwei Ströme zusammentreffen, so ist die Anzahl \(s\) der Zusammenstösse der Ströme bestimmt durch \[ s=n+g-k, \] wo \(g\) die Anzahl der Zweige, \(k\) die der Knoten bezeichnet.
