Breitet sich eine dünne Schicht reinen Wassers über einer Oelschicht aus, so wird die Oberflächenspannung, damit also die potentielle Energie der ganzen Masse vermehrt. Hierdurch aber ist ein Verlust an lebendiger Kraft bedingt. Das ist der Grund der im Titel genannten Erscheinung. Die Vermehrung der potentiellen Energie lässt sich aus vorhandenen Messungen numerisch bestimmen.
