Both physical observations and numerical simulations show that a freely evolving, turbulent fluid in two dimensions tends to form long-lived, large-scale coherent structures. In two dimensions, the vorticity transport equation governs the evolution of an ideal fluid. Here, the authors formulate and investigate certain corresponding lattice models. The main result of the paper concerns the continuum limit of lattice models and its physical implications. To prove the main theorem, the authors use the properties of hidden processes.
