The paper is devoted to the Einstein equations for a plane-symmetric gravitational field (with source) coupled to an arbitrary nonlinear sigma model (NSM for short). This can be represented in the form of dynamical equations of a generalized effective NSM. Of special interest is the idea that the gravitational equations are studied by the known methods of analyzing NSM equations. Exact solutions for a dynamical system of a two-component diagonal NSM are found by the functional parameter method proposed by the authors in 1997. The two-component NSM as a source of gravity is discussed in detail.
