The authors show that the efficiency of high-order essentially non-oscillatory approximations of conservation laws can be improved if ideas of multiresolution analysis (cf. Abgrall and Harten, CAM-reports 93-13, 94-10 and 94-20, University of California, Los Angeles, 1993-1994) are taken in account. These methods of data compression reduce the necessary amount of discrete data and also serve as tools in detecting low-dimensional features in the numerical solution. They consider the example of interpolation on the line as well as the case of multresolution analysis of cell average data (as e.g. in finite volume approximations). A robust agglomeration procedure and recovery alogrithms are developed. The claimed efficiency of the algorithms are documented by means of a number of examples.
