In this article the authors introduce the definitions of a free curve and a nearly free curve. They also show properties that these curves satisfy and they exhibit interesting examples. The main result shows that a rational cuspidal curve is either a free curve or a nearly free curve when the degree of the curve is either even or a prime power, or when the group of curve is abelian.
