It is shown that \((AB)^{\dagger}= B^{\dagger}A^{\dagger}- B^{\dagger}[(I_n-BB^{\dagger})(I_n- A^{\dagger}A)]^{\dagger}A^{\dagger}\) holds if and only if \[ \text{Range}(AA^*AB)= \text{Range}(AB) \quad\text{and}\quad \text{Range} [(ABB^*B)^*]= \text{Range}[(AB)^*] \] hold, where \(M^*\) and \(M^{\dagger}\) stand for the conjugate transpose and the Moore-Penrose inverse of the matrix \(M\). Some applications to orthogonal projectors and to weighted Moore-Penrose inverses are given.
