Coupled linear differential equations governed by a linear operator of the form \(L=\left(\begin{smallmatrix} A & B\\ -B^* & C\end{smallmatrix}\right)\) defined on a Hilbert space, are studied. If \(A\) and \(C\) are exponentially stable (i.e. generate exponentially stable semigroups of contractions), \(B\) is bounded in a certain sense, \(L\) is closed and \(\lambda_0I-L\) is surjective, then \(L\) is exponentially stable. If \(A\) generates a contraction semigroup, \(C\) is self-adjoint and exponentially stable, \(B\) is bounded in a particular sense and a uniqueness condition holds, then \(L\) is asymptotically stable. The given applications deal with the wave equation coupled with the heat equation and, with the boundary stabilization of the thermoelasticity system.
