The author presents a discrete analog of the Poisson summation formula, which relates the sum of the values of a function at the nodes of a spaced-out uniform grid to the sum of its finite Fourier coefficients. As an application of this formula an elementary proof of the functional equation for the theta function \(\theta(t) = \sum_{n = - \infty}^{\infty} \, e^{- \pi t \, n^2}\) is given.
