Let \((M,g)\) be a Riemannian manifold with an almost product structure \(P\). Using scalar invariants \(\Pi = P^{ik} P^{jl} R_{ijkl}\) and \(R = g^{ik} g^{jl} R_{ijkl}\), the author derives an integral formula on a compact orientable Riemannian almost product manifold \((M, g, P)\). Making use of this formula the author proves a number of interesting properties of two complementary distributions \(\nabla\) and \(\nabla^ \perp\) on \(M\). Among other things, it is shown that the minimal totally geodesic distribution \(\nabla\) and the totally geodesic distribution \(\nabla^ \perp\) cannot be simultaneously integrable. Some results of this paper generalize those in [\textit{A. M. Naveira} and \textit{A. H. Rocamora}, Differential geometric methods in mathematical physics, Proc. Int. Conf., Clausthal/Ger. 1983, Lect. Notes Math. 1139, 263-279 (1985; Zbl 0571.53024)].
