    This paper computes higher moments of coefficients of characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices and relates this to the problem of counting magic squares (integer stochastic matrices). Random orthogonal and symplectic matrices, and GUE matrices are dealt with similarly; the last ties in to matching polynomials.
