The paper deals with the construction of an example of a Lie algebra over a field where the sum of two locally solvable ideals is not a locally solvable ideal. This gives a negative solution to a problem of \textit{R. Amayo} and \textit{I. Stewart} [Infinite-dimensional Lie algebras, Noordhoof, Leiden (1974; Zbl 0302.17006)].
