This paper presents a version of the fast multipole method which is based on Taylor expansions rather than multipole expansions. This allows a unified treatment of a large class of Green functions associated with elliptic boundary value problems and simplifies the discussion of the translation operator. Theorems, lemmas and error estimates are developed and numerical experiments are performed for verification.
