Let \(h\) be a holomorphic mapping defined in a neighborhood of a point \(a\in\mathbb C^m\) with values in \(\mathbb C^n\). The main result of the paper is the following important characterization of the Lelong number \(\nu_{f\circ h}(a)\) of the pull-back by \(h\) of a plurisubharmonic function \(f\). (a) If the interior of \(h(V)\) is non-empty for any sufficiently small neighborhood of \(a\), then there exists a constant \(C\) such that \(\nu_{f\circ h}(a)\leq C\nu_f(h(a))\) for any function \(f\) plurisubharmonic in a neighborhood of \(h(a)\). (b) If the interior of \(h(V)\) is empty for a neighborhood \(V\) of \(a\), then \(h(V)\) is pluripolar in \(\mathbb C^n\) and there exists a function \(f\) plurisubharmonic in a neighborhood of \(h(a)\) such that \(\nu_{f\circ h}(a)=+\infty\) and \(\nu_f(h(a))=0\).
