The large-time behavior of the solution to the initial value problem for the equation \(u_{tt}-\Delta u+u_t=F(x,t,u)\) in \(\mathbb {R}^N\times (0,\infty)\), \(N=1,2,3\), is studied. Under the assumption on \(F\): \(| F(x,t,u(x,t))| \leq CE^{\rho }_0(1+t)^{-\sigma }| u(x,t)| \) for \(\rho ,C>0\) and \(\sigma >1\), the authors give precise decay estimates of the difference between the solution \(u(x,t)\) and its asymptotic profile. The proofs are based on the \(L^p\)-\(L^q\)-type decomposition of the fundamental solutions to the linearized damped wave equation and asymptotic expansion of the solution to a nonlinear heat equation.
