Let \(G\) be a connected algebraic group defined over \(\mathbb Q\). The authors have, in a previous paper [Compos. Math. 141, 1255--1309 (2005; Zbl 1077.22014)] which asserts the equidistribution of homogeneous subvarieties of an arithmetic quotient in the adelic topology under general conditions. In this paper, the authors investigate the applications of this conjecture to the André--Oort conjecture. More precisely, let \(S\) be a Shimura variety associated with the data \((G,X)\) where \(G\) is adjoint and \(X\) is a conjugacy class of homomorphisms from \(\mathrm{Res}_{\mathbb C/\mathbb R}(\mathbb G_m) \rightarrow G(\mathbb R)\) satisfying the Deligne conditions. Let \(Z\) be a Hodge-generic subvariety of \(S\) containing a infinite, bounded family of CM points for which the kernel is connected. Then the authors show that if their conjecture holds then \(Z=S\). The proof uses an idea of \textit{S.-W. Zhang} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 59, 3657--3689 (2005; Zbl 1096.14016)]. The main part of the proof is devoted to deriving a condition for the connectedness of the kernel of reciprocity map and verifying this condition case by case.
