The aim of this paper is to review two mathematical models of microbial competition in the chemostat incorporating respectively temporal and spatial heterogeneities. It is shown that the global behaviour of the solutions of the model equations can be analyzed rigorously to establish conditions for coexistence. Parameter values for coexistence are obtained by bifurcation analysis.
