Complementarity problems are of theoretical interest, since they provide, similarly as variational inequalities, exceptional families, KKM-type theorems, and retraction problems, an equivalent way of formulating classical fixed point theorems. However, some people claim that they also have applications to a large variety of problems in financial mathematics and economical equilibrium theory. The author of this book is one of the leading specialists in both the theory and applications of complementarity problems and has written a number of books, in part with coauthors, on this and related topics [Berlin: Springer (1992; Zbl 0795.90072), Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang (1993; Zbl 0776.41023), Singapore: World Scientific (1997; Zbl 0878.47040), Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers (2000; Zbl 0954.90056), and Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers (2002; Zbl 1081.90001)]. The present monograph consists of eight chapters. In the first chapter, the author collects some material which is needed in what follows. The second chapter is concerned with two topics from the title, variational inequalities and complementarity problems, including their equivalence, while the third chapter introduces the remaining topic, Leray--Schauder alternatives. The following chapters are all devoted to the notion of exceptional sequences and families, a concept which has been introduced and widely developed by the author himself. The book closes with a detailed list of references which reflects the state-of-the-art of the theory, the methods, and the applications of the problems covered by the author, and which may serve as a guide to the vast literature on these problems. The book will be of interest to specialists in applied nonlinear analysis, variational inequalities, complementarity theory, equilibrium theory, and operations research. It may also be used to get a glimpse of the diversity of the directions in which current research in this field is still moving.
