Let \(K\) be an algebraically closed field and consider abelian groups \(G\) having no element of order equal to the characteristic of \(K\). It is shown that a complete set of invariants for the \(K\)-algebra structure of the group algebra \(KG\) consists of the cardinality of the torsion subgroup \(G_0\) of \(G\), and the isomorphism class of \(G/G_0\). An important step in the proof is to show that two commutative \(K\)-algebras of countable dimension are isomorphic if they are algebraic, have trivial nilradicals, and have the property that every idempotent decomposes into a sum of two orthogonal idempotents.
