In this paper Atiyah's classical results about indecomposable vector bundles on elliptic curves are given a new proof by means of the Fourier-Mukai transform. The approach is similar to the one contained in the recent book on abelian varieties by [\textit{A. Polishchuk}, Abelian varieties, theta functions, and the Fourier transform. Cambridge Tracts in Mathematics. 153 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press) (2003; Zbl 1018.14016)], but the proofs are different. It should be mentioned that moduli spaces of (relatively) semistable sheaves on elliptic fibrations have been treated in the literature by means of the Fourier-Mukai transform [cf. \textit{R. Friedman, J. W. Morgan} and \textit{E. Witten}, J. Algebr. Geom. 8, No. 2, 279--401 (1999; Zbl 0937.14004); \textit{T. Bridgeland}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 498, 115--133 (1998; Zbl 0905.14020); \textit{C. Bartocci, U. Bruzzo, J. M. Muñoz Porras} and the reviewer, Math. Nachr. 238, 23--36 (2002; Zbl 1033.14007); \textit{J. M. Muñoz Porras} and the reviewer, J. Geom. Phys. 43, No. 2--3, 163--183 (2002; Zbl 1068.14051) or \textit{A. Căldăraru}, C. R., Math., Acad. Sci. Paris 334, No. 6, 469--472 (2002; Zbl 1065.14053)]. However, in all these references, Atiyah's results were used without giving any new proof. It is nice to see how applying either the paper reviewed here or Polishchuk's book, the methods based on the Fourier-Mukai transform are enough to describe the moduli spaces of (relatively) semistable sheaves on elliptic fibrations.
