A real or complex vector bundle over a subspace \(A\) of a topological space \(X\) is called stably extendible if there is a corresponding vector bundle over \(X\) whose restriction to \(A\) is stably equivalent to the given one. In the paper under review the authors consider the inclusions of the mod \(3\) lens spaces \(L^{2n+1}(3) \subset L^{2m+1}(3)\) for \(m > n\), and they ask for stable extendibility for specific bundles over \(L^{2n+1}(3)\). In particular they investigate the question for bundles which are stably equivalent to sums built from the canonical bundle over \(L^{2n+1}(3)\) and its second tensor power. For such sums they obtain explicit answers. More precisely they show that these bundles are always stably extendible provided their dimensions are high enough, and for those who fail the dimension condition they can give an explicit condition which is technical but necessary and sufficient. They then use these and earlier results from [\textit{T. Kobayashi} and \textit{K. Komatsu}, Hiroshima Math. J. 35, No. 3, 403--412 (2005; Zbl 1096.55010)] to show that the complexification of the normal bundle \(\nu_n\) of an immersion of \(L^{2n+1}(3)\) into \(4n+3\)-dimensional Euclidean space is stably extendible to \(L^{2m+1}(3)\) for any \(m>n\) if and only if \(0\leq n\leq 5\). In addition, using the same techniques, they derive a corresponding result for the complexification of \(\nu_n \otimes \nu_n\), building on a computation contained in [\textit{T. Kobayashi, H. Maki} and \textit{T. Yoshida}, Mem. Fac. Sci. Kochi Univ., Ser. A 21, 31--38 (2000; Zbl 0951.55018)].
