Let \((M,g)\) be a closed, connected Riemannian manifold of dimension \(n\geq 2\). The paper studies the singularly perturbed nonlinear elliptic equation \[ -\epsilon^2\Delta_g u+u=|u|^{p-2}u \tag{1} \] with \(u\in H_g^1(M) \) and \(2<p<2^\ast\), where \(2^\ast:=\frac{2n}{n-2}\) if \(n>2\) and \(2^\ast=\infty\) if \(n=2\). As a first step the authors summarize the current known results about the existence and properties of solutions to \((1)\). The main focus of the paper then is to describe the asymptotic profile of sign changing solutions with small energy to \((1)\) in the limit \(\epsilon\to 0\).
