Let \(n\geq 3\) be an integer and \(P_d(f)\) be an algebraic differential polynomial in \(f\) of degree \(d\leq n- 2\). If \(p_1\) and \(p_2\) are two nonzero polynomials and \(\alpha_1\) and \(\alpha_2\) are two nonzero constants such that \(\alpha_1\neq \alpha_2\), \(\alpha_1/\alpha_2\neq d/n\), and \(\alpha_1/\alpha_2\neq n/d\), then any transcendental entire solution \(f\) of the equation \[ f^n(z)+ P_d(f(z))= p_1(z)e^{\alpha_1z} + p_2(z)e^{\alpha_2z}\tag{\(*\)} \] satisfies \(1-\limsup_{r\to \infty}(\overline N(r, 1/f)/T(r,f))= 0\). Examples show for some choices of \(P_d\) solutions of \((*)\) exist, while for others \((*)\) has no entire solution. Somewhat analogous results are shown when \(P_d(f)\) is replaced by a differential-difference polynomial in \((*)\). Results in the paper under review complement the theorem of \textit{P. Li} and \textit{C.-C. Yang} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 320, No. 2, 827--835 (2006; Zbl 1100.34066)], where, for \(n\geq 4\), \(d\leq n-3\), and \(\alpha_1/\alpha_2\) not rational, \((*)\) is shown to have no transcendental entire solutions.
