Let S be a bounded operator on a Hilbert space and let M and N be two invariant subspaces for S. M and N are called unitarily equivalent if the operators \(T| M\) and \(T| N\) are unitarily equivalent. If S is the shift, operator of multiplication by z on the Hardy space, then, by Beurling's description of the invariant subspaces of S, any two are unitarily equivalent. Here the author shows the situation is quite different for the Bergman and Dirichlet spaces. It is shown that two S invariant subspaces of the Bergman space are unitarily equivalent only if they are equal. The same is shown for the Dirichlet space under extra hypotheses on the subspaces.
