This paper analyses a one-dimensional thermoelastic system subject to thermal and viscous damping, which affect the stability of the system and entail an energy decay in time. The paper considers a model case where the specimen is divided into three intervals, each of them displaying one of the following three behaviours: no dissipation (type II), viscous damping (type II with viscous damping), thermal damping (type III). Employing an approach based on semigroup theory, the author establishes the energy decay rate according to the position of the interval with thermal damping: if such interval is well contained in the domain, the energy decay is polynomial; otherwise it is exponential.
