The author starts with a brief desccription of the mathematics seminar culture at the Moscow State University at the time. The more detailed discussion is given of two dynamic seminars: Sinai-Alexeyev seminar and Anosov-Katok seminar. After this the author turns to early stages of Ya. B. Pesin's career which were practicably inseparable from those of his life-long friend and early collaborator Misha Brin. Then there is indicated the importance of two early bodies of work, one joint by Brin and Pesin and the other by Pesin alone. The paper is finished with some elements of analysis and illustrations of the impact of Pesin's work which led to the so called ``Pesin theory''.
