Let \(\xi_ 1,\xi_ 2,\ldots\) be an arbitrary infinite sequence of complex numbers on the unit circle. For every \(n\in\mathbb{N}\) and every \(z\in\mathbb{C}\), let \(P_ n(z):=\prod^ n_{j=1}(z-\xi_ j)\). In 1979 G. Wagner proved the following result (which was a famous conjecture of Erdős): \[ \limsup_{n\to\infty}\max_{| z|=1}| P_ n(z)|=\infty. \] In this paper the author uses the Roth-Halasz method in uniform distribution (of course enriched with rather ingenious new techniques) to give an in some sense best possible quantitative version of this result: There are absolute constants \(c,c_ 0>0\) such that \(\max_{1\leq n\leq N}\max_{| z|=1} | P_ n(z)|>c_ 0 N^ c\) for all \(N\) and all \(\xi_ 1,\xi_ 2,\ldots\).
