Given a compact subset \(K\subset\mathbb{R}^n\), the author considers the nearest point mapping \(p_K:\mathbb{R}^n\to\exp(K)\) assigning to each point \(x\in\mathbb{R}^n\) the set of all points of \(K\) nearest to \(x\). \textit{T. Zamfirescu} [ibid. 54, No. 6, 563-566 (1990; Zbl 0715.54013)] has shown that the set \(\mathcal K_p\) consisting of all compacta \(K\subset \mathbb{R}^n\) for which the map \(p_K\) is not single-valued at densely many points, is residual in \(\exp(\mathbb{R}^n)\). The main result of the paper states that the space \(\mathcal K_p\) is homeomorphic to the Hilbert space \(l^2\); moreover, it is contained in the hyperspace \(\exp(\mathbb{R}^n)\) as the pseudo-interior in the Hilbert cube without some point.
