In this paper a new proof of Gromov's compactness theorem for pseudo- holomorphic curves [\textit{M. Gromov}, Invent. Math. 82, 307-347 (1985; Zbl 0592.53025)] based on a partial differential equation method of Schoen and Uhlenbeck [\textit{R. Schoen}, Seminar on nonlinear partial differential equations, Publ., Math. Sci. Res. Inst. 2, 321-358 (1984; Zbl 0551.58011)] is given. In the second part of the paper another result of the above mentioned paper by Gromov is reproven namely, the symplectic rigidity of the open round ball.
